Kōji Tongari (尖 浩二), or just Kouji Tongari is one of the main characters of the series. He is from a rich family but is a scaredy cat. He is a friend of Kiteretsu. He loves his mother alot and sometimes he asks for devices from Kiteretsu for help. He is also known for troubling Korusuke by setting various pranks for him,like in one of the episode Tongari puts on a hat with ponytail which Korusuke has on his head and tries to steal a fruit from the temple in front of the priest,s eyes.He is known to cry very often and he is a mama's boy as he always takes permission from his mother for whatever he does. He is very similar to Suneo Honekawa and resembles Haromi from the perman series. He does want to steal stuffs from Kiteretsu.
- A wealthy man with a villa. At an extreme mother's complex , she screams "Mom" and cries when she attaches to something . Like Miyoko, he doesn't seem to be bad at studying or exercising. There is a feminine side in the mother's complex, but there is also a savvy side, such as making friends with girls in cram schools and other elementary schools.
- In the TVSP version of 1987, it was a complete Buta gorilla waist purse, and had a cheeky behavior such as boasting of being rich. The remnants remained even in the early days of the TV anime version, but as the series progressed, the character changed, and eventually it grew more mature and sensible. He has a crush on theatre artist Hanamaru Satsuki who transferred to their school for a short term. Tongari's mom seems to be aware of her son's love interest as she is shown to be biased towards Satsuki whenever the group visits her. In earlier episodes both Butagorilla and Tongari were not on great terms with Kiteretsu and often bullied Korosuke, they also seemed to fight with him for Miyoko's attention. Later both had their own love interests and also became good friends with Kiteretsu; going together on adventures.
